The knee is the largest joint in the body, and it is made up of bones, cartilage, ligaments and tendons. It is one of the most stressed joints in the body responsible for weight-bearing and movement, making it vulnerable to injury.
What Causes Knee Pain?
Knee pain is often associated with aging and continual wear and stress on the knee joint such as arthritis. People who run or play sports that involve jumping or quick pivoting are also likely to experience an injury or a sudden movement that strains the knee.
Common Conditions that Cause Knee Pain
ACL injury
An ACL injury is a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). People who participate in high impact sports, such as basketball, soccer or other sports that require sudden changes in direction are prone to ACL injury. Often a pop or snap is heard, followed by swelling. Symptoms also include tenderness along the joint line and pain with walking.
Knee Fracture
A fracture is most often caused by trauma, such as falls, auto accidents, or sports-related contact. The knee bones, including the patella or kneecap, can be broken. People whose bones have been weakened by osteoporosis can sometimes sustain a knee fracture simply during a fall. A patellar fracture can make it difficult to straighten your knee or walk.
Knee bursitis
Knee bursitis is an irritation or inflammation of the bursae around your knee. Bursae are jelly-like, fluid-filled sacs that serve as a cushion between bones, muscles, tendons and skin, reducing the friction that occurs with movement. The kneecap and the lower inner side of the knee are the areas most susceptible to bursitis. Knee bursitis is caused by repetitive use and over-stressing the areas around your knee joints. It can also be caused by direct trauma or infection.
Meniscus tears
A meniscus is two wedge-shaped pieces of cartilage that connect the thigh bone and the shin bone to help stabilize the joint. A meniscal tear generally happens during sports, where the knee twists, pivots, or an individual is tackled. Normal wear from ageing can weaken the meniscus, causing it to tear with a simple awkward turn during normal daily activities. Symptoms of a tear are usually pain, stiffness, swelling, locking, and decreased range of motion.
Knee Arthritis
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. With this degenerative disease, the cartilage that cushions the joints breaks down and can cause aching, immobility, stiffness and swelling. It often affects middle-age and older people. Osteoarthritis may be caused by excess stress on the joint such as repeated injury or being overweight.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that can affect your knee joints. Unlike the wear-and-tear damage of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis affects the lining of your joints, causing a painful swelling that can eventually result in bone erosion and joint deformity.
